Know Your Rights — Guides by Region

Seite 1 von 1

Data protection rights are meaningless if you cannot find out what they are. This reference page collects the best plain-language guides by jurisdiction — bookmark the section that covers you.

EU / EEA

Your Europe — Data Protection (europa.eu/youreurope) The European Commission's citizen portal explains GDPR rights in plain language across all 24 official EU languages. Covers access, rectification, erasure, portability, and how to lodge a complaint with a national data protection authority (DPA). An excellent first stop for EU residents.

European Data Protection Board (EDPB) — Citizen Resources (edpb.europa.eu) The body that coordinates GDPR enforcement across EU member states publishes guidelines, FAQs, and an interactive DPA finder. Particularly useful for cross-border situations involving organisations in multiple EU countries.

United Kingdom

ICO — Your Data Matters (ico.org.uk/your-data-matters) The Information Commissioner's Office runs a dedicated citizen hub explaining UK GDPR rights — essentially the same as EU GDPR, retained post-Brexit. Includes step-by-step guides for making subject access requests and reporting concerns. The ICO also offers a telephone helpline.

Germany

BfDI — Bürger und Verbraucher (bfdi.bund.de/DE/BürgerundVerbraucher) The Bundesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz und die Informationsfreiheit provides citizen-facing resources on federal data protection rights. Note: Germany also has 16 state-level DPAs (Landesdatenschutzbehörden) with jurisdiction over state government and many private-sector organisations based in that state.

France

CNIL — Vos droits (cnil.fr/fr/vos-droits) France's national DPA offers a comprehensive rights section in French, covering how to exercise each GDPR right with template letters and an online complaint tool. One of the most user-friendly DPA citizen portals in Europe.

United States

FTC Consumer Information — Privacy (consumer.ftc.gov) The Federal Trade Commission's consumer hub explains US privacy rights across sectors — credit reports (FCRA), health data (HIPAA), children's data (COPPA), and general consumer protection. Includes scam alerts and identity theft recovery tools.

IAPP US State Privacy Law Guide (iapp.org) The International Association of Privacy Professionals tracks all US state privacy laws (California CCPA/CPRA, Virginia CDPA, Colorado CPA, and more) with plain-language summaries. Essential for understanding which rights apply to you by state.

Canada

OPC — Know Your Privacy Rights (priv.gc.ca) The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada explains rights under PIPEDA (federal) and provincial equivalents, with guides for individuals, sample request letters, and a complaint form.

Australia

OAIC — Privacy for Individuals (oaic.gov.au/privacy) The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner covers rights under the Privacy Act 1988, with guides on access, correction, and complaints. Also covers the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme — you have the right to be notified of breaches affecting you.

India

Internet Freedom Foundation (internetfreedom.in) IFF is India's leading digital rights advocacy organisation. As the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 comes into force, IFF publishes explainers, policy analyses, and know-your-rights guides tailored to Indian residents.

South Africa

Information Regulator (inforegulator.org.za) South Africa's data protection authority under POPIA provides citizen guidance, a complaints portal, and resources for both individuals and organisations.

Global

Privacy International (privacyinternational.org) A UK-based NGO with 30+ years of research on surveillance and data exploitation. Their explainer series covers privacy basics, government surveillance, and corporate data practices — accessible worldwide.

Electronic Frontier Foundation (eff.org) Founded in 1990, EFF is the leading US digital rights organisation with global reach. Their Surveillance Self-Defense guide (ssd.eff.org) is one of the best free practical resources available in multiple languages.
