Stay Informed — Ongoing Learning

Data privacy is a fast-moving field. Laws change, court rulings shift enforcement, and new technologies create new risks. The resources below will help you stay current — whether you want headlines, deep analysis, or a path to professional certification.

News & Analysis

IAPP Privacy Tracker (iapp.org/news) The International Association of Privacy Professionals publishes daily news, regulatory summaries, and in-depth analysis of global privacy law. The IAPP is the world's largest privacy professional membership organisation. Free articles are available; full archive requires membership. Their Daily Dashboard email is a widely read privacy industry digest.

Future of Privacy Forum (fpf.org) A Washington DC-based think tank that bridges technology, policy, and law. Publishes reports and podcasts on emerging privacy issues — AI, health data, children's privacy, connected vehicles. Independent and relatively balanced across perspectives.

The Privacy, Security & OSINT Show (podcast — Michael Bazzell) A practical weekly podcast covering digital privacy, open-source intelligence, and security. Bazzell focuses on actionable advice for individuals — removing personal information from the internet, choosing private tools, and understanding tracking technologies. Accessible to non-specialists. Available on all major podcast platforms.

Risky Business (podcast — Patrick Gray, risky.biz) A leading cybersecurity news podcast covering data breaches, vulnerability disclosures, and policy developments. More technical in focus but essential for understanding the breach landscape. Weekly; free.

DPA Newsletters and Guidance

National data protection authorities publish binding guidance, codes of practice, and enforcement decisions — all of which affect your rights in practice. Subscribe directly via your national DPA's website:

  • EU: edpb.europa.eu/news_en (EDPB consolidated news)
  • UK: ico.org.uk/about-the-ico/media-centre/news-and-blogs
  • Germany: bfdi.bund.de/DE/Infothek/Pressemitteilungen

Academic & Research

Privacy International Reports (privacyinternational.org/reports) In-depth investigative reports on surveillance systems, data broker practices, and government access to personal data. Rigorous, footnoted, freely available.

Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society (cyber.harvard.edu) Harvard's internet research centre publishes open-access research on privacy, surveillance, AI governance, and platform regulation. A trusted academic source with real-world policy influence.

Stanford Internet Observatory (cyber.fsi.stanford.edu) Stanford's interdisciplinary research unit studying the abuse of information technology — including privacy violations, disinformation, and data exploitation. Publishes reports and a regular newsletter.

Advocacy & Action

If you want to do more than learn:

  • EFF Action Center (eff.org/action): campaign alerts on US legislation, regulatory comment periods, and petitions. Sign up to contact your elected representatives on surveillance and privacy bills.
  • Access Now Campaigns (accessnow.org/campaigns): global campaigns on encryption, surveillance technology exports, and digital rights for activists. Often co-signed by international civil society groups.
  • European Digital Rights — EDRi (edri.org): tracks and campaigns on EU digital legislation. Their newsletter covers the full legislative pipeline — useful if you want to engage with EU policy processes.

Continuing Education & Certification

IAPP Certification Path — CIPP The Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) is the global standard for privacy credentialing. Regional variants include CIPP/E (Europe/GDPR), CIPP/US (United States), CIPP/A (Asia), and CIPP/C (Canada). The IAPP Foundation of Privacy certificate is a lower-cost starting point. Details: iapp.org/certify.

Coursera — Privacy Law and Data Protection Specialisations Several universities offer online specialisations on Coursera covering GDPR, US privacy law, and data ethics. These are accessible, affordable, and stackable toward university credit in some cases. Search "privacy law" or "data protection" on coursera.org.

A Note on Information Quality

Privacy advice varies widely in quality. Prefer sources that: cite primary legislation and court decisions; disclose funding or affiliations; update regularly; and distinguish between what the law says and what the author recommends. Avoid sources that make sweeping claims without references or that sell products alongside "objective" advice.
