What Is a Community?#
A community is a group of people who live in the same area and share places like schools, parks, shops, and roads. Your neighbourhood, your town, or your city is a community. The people in your community help each other every day.
What Makes a Community Work?#
A community works well when people have different jobs and help each other. Think about everything you need in a day: safe streets, a school with teachers, shops with food, and hospitals when you are sick. All of these depend on community helpers — people who do jobs that help everyone.
The Importance of Community#
Communities are important because:
- Safety — Police officers and firefighters keep us safe.
- Health — Doctors and nurses care for us when we are ill.
- Education — Teachers help us learn and grow.
- Food — Farmers grow food, and shop workers sell it.
- Services — Postal workers deliver letters. Sanitation workers collect rubbish so our streets are clean.
Every job in a community matters. No one person can do everything — we all depend on each other!
You Are Part of a Community#
You are part of your community too! Even children can help. You can be kind to neighbours. You can pick up litter in the park. You can help a classmate who is struggling. You can say thank you to people who help you.
Types of Communities#
Communities can be small or large:
- A small village is a tiny community where everyone knows each other.
- A town is bigger — with more shops, schools, and services.
- A city is very large — with thousands or millions of people.
Now let's meet some of the amazing people who make our communities safe, healthy, and happy!
