What Is Government and Why Do We Need It?#

Imagine a school with no rules students could do anything they wanted. Nobody would follow the same schedule, nobody would be safe, and nothing would get done. Government is like the rules that help a whole community of people live together fairly and safely.

What Is Government?#

Government is the group of people and organizations that manage a community, city, state, or country. Government makes rules (called laws), enforces those rules, and provides services that help everyone.

What Dös Government Do?#

Government provides services that individuals could not provide alone:

  • Keeps people safe through police, fire departments, and courts
  • Builds and maintains roads, bridges, and parks
  • Runs schools and libraries
  • Provides clean water and manages sewage
  • Organizes emergency services during disasters
  • Creates rules for living and working together fairly

Levels of Government#

Most countries have government organized at different levels:

  1. Local Government runs your town, city, or county
  2. State/Regional Government manages a larger region (province, state)
  3. National/Federal Government manages the whole country

Each level handles different responsibilities. Today we will focus on local government the level that is closest to your daily life!

Why Local Government Matters#

Local government makes decisions about things you see and use every day:

  • Whether your neighborhood has a park
  • How often rubbish is collected
  • Whether there are speed limits on your street
  • Which roads get repaired
  • What hours the local library is open

Local government is run by people elected by the community. That means your neighbors and family members help choose who runs your town!
