What Is Art Critique?#

When you look at a piece of art and say "I like it!" or "I don't like it!" that is a reaction, but it is not an art critique. Art critique is a thoughtful, systematic process of looking at art carefully and forming judgments that you can explain and support with evidence from the work itself.

Why Learn to Critique Art?#

Learning to critique art teaches you to:

  • Look more carefully and notice things you would otherwise miss
  • Think about choices artists make and why
  • Form and express your own opinions with reasons
  • Appreciate art you might not immediately "like"
  • Communicate your ideas clearly
  • Connect art to history, culture, and human experience

What Art Critique Is NOT#

Art critique is NOT:

  • Just saying "I like it" or "I don't like it" without reasons
  • Judging whether something is "good" or "bad" art in a simple way
  • Attacking the artist personally
  • Expecting all art to look realistic

Art critique IS:

  • Looking carefully at what is actually there
  • Asking questions about why things were made this way
  • Connecting what you see to what it might mean
  • Making supported judgments

The Four Steps of Art Critique#

A very useful framework for art critique has four steps:

  1. DESCRIBE What do you literally see?
  2. ANALYZE How are the elements of art used?
  3. INTERPRET What dös it mean? What mood dös it create?
  4. EVALUATE How effective is the work? Dös it succeed?

We will explore each step in depth in the coming pages!
