Microclimates and Urban Heat Islands
Microclimates are localised climate conditions that differ measurably from the surrounding regional climate due to variations in surface cover, topography, vegetation, or water bodies. The urban heat island (UHI) effect is the most extensively studied and socially significant microclimate phenomenon, with urban centres recording temperatures systematically higher than their rural surroundings. Understanding microclimates has growing importance for urban planning, public health, and climate adaptation.
