Morphological Productivity and Blocking

An examination of morphological productivity -- the capacity of word-formation rules to generate new, well-formed lexical items -- and of blocking, the phenomenon whereby an existing lexical item preempts the application of an otherwise available rule. The topic surveys qualitative and quantitative approaches to productivity, classic and contemporary accounts of blocking, and the implications of both for the architecture of the mental lexicon.
