Critical Cartography and Map Rhetoric
Critical cartography examines maps as social and political constructions rather than objective representations of geographic reality. Drawing on poststructuralist theory, feminist geography, and postcolonial studies, critical cartographers analyse how maps embody the interests and values of their makers, naturalise particular visions of territory and identity, and exercise power over the people and places they represent. This perspective has transformed how geographers understand both the history of cartography and the politics of contemporary mapmaking.
