Participatory GIS and Community Mapping
Participatory GIS (PGIS) integrates Geographic Information Systems with participatory approaches to planning and research, enabling communities to contribute their local geographic knowledge to spatial databases and use mapped outputs to advocate for their interests. It emerged as a response to the top-down nature of conventional GIS and has been applied in contexts ranging from indigenous land rights to urban neighbourhood planning and disaster risk reduction. PGIS raises fundamental questions about the nature of geographic knowledge, the politics of data sovereignty, and the ethics of mapping marginalised communities.
