Cultural Landscape and Heritage
The cultural landscape concept, developed by Carl Sauer and the Berkeley School, treats the visible landscape as a cultural document recording the cumulative imprint of human societies on the natural environment. Heritage, as a related concept, involves the identification, protection, and interpretation of landscapes, buildings, and artefacts as resources that carry cultural meaning and connect present communities to their pasts. Both concepts raise contested questions about whose culture is represented, who benefits from heritage designation, and how landscapes of difficult history should be interpreted.
