Nation-States, Sovereignty, and Secessionism
The nation-state, the political unit that claims sovereign authority over a defined territory and a bounded population, has been the dominant form of political spatial organisation for the past two centuries. Yet the nation-state is neither natural nor inevitable: it is a historically constructed form whose claims to territorial integrity are continuously contested by secessionist movements, irredentist claims, federalising pressures, and supranational integration. Political geographers examine how sovereignty is produced, maintained, and challenged, and how territorial attachments and national identities are spatially constructed.
