Gender and Sexuality in Urban Space
Cities are not neutral backdrops to social life but are actively shaped by, and in turn shape, gender relations and sexual norms. Feminist and queer geographers have demonstrated that urban space is differentially experienced by people of different genders and sexualities, with implications for safety, mobility, economic participation, and identity. From the gendered division of public and private space to the emergence of gay neighbourhoods and queer urbanism, this topic explores the complex relationships between spatial organisation and the social construction of gender and sexuality.
